Innerpulse – “Noose”
A Spill Exclusive Music Premiere
“We’re making the kind of music we want to hear played on the radio.”
“If you’re barreling down a desert road and you’ve got demons growing in your rear-view mirror, turn on and turn up Innerpulse. We’re your band and this is your score.”
Innerpulse is a boreal rock band based out of Toronto, Canada. It formed in 2008 and is comprised of five Canadians who—when not making music together or selling their souls to household demons for penny favors—can be found developing films and books with PM Pictures and with Guy Faux Books. Their influences range from Afrobeat and jazz to stoner rock and folk. Innerpulse can frequently be seen quaking the Silver Dollar, the El Mocambo, the Crown and Tiger, or Cherry Cola’s.
Members
Joe MacKinnon (Vocals, Guitar) – Calgary-born, Toronto-raised. First introduced to music via fiddling; encouraged by his parents. Picked up bass to meet women. Failing that, he got an acoustic, met Mike Campbell and Carlo Schefter, and subsequently started jamming the kind of tunes he wanted to hear played on the radio. Writes science fiction novels for Guy Faux Books and produces films with PM Pictures between shows.
Mike Campbell (Guitar) – Michael comes from a family of piano players—himself not one of them. He learned about composition by playing drums along to “De-Loused in the Comatorium,” and by learning Radiohead songs on guitar. In his third year of university he met Joe MacKinnon, with whom he started composing the first INNERPULSE songs. Shortly thereafter, Joe introduced Michael to Carlo, Logan, and Tim.
Carlo Schefter (Bass) – Director, musician, and visual artist. He has designed and directed a number of award-winning short films, music videos, and radio plays, and has written and produced albums and books. While he scores movies with the in-house band at PM Pictures, he gives INNERPULSE the furious bass necessary for your desert-highway soundtrack.
Logan Johnston (Drums) – Logan Johnston has been playing drums since the age of 9. He started playing rock and roll off the top. Since that day he has explored jazz, funk, Latin, and Afrobeat rhythms, never limiting himself and bringing his collective knowledge to every song he writes. His aspirations include playing Madison Square Garden, the Superbowl, and various lawn-bowling championships around the Miami-Dade area.
Tim Popowich (Guitar) – Long ago, a fiery wolf spirit chose Timothy Popowich to inhabit as a flesh spaceship to experience planet Earth. Raised by two beautiful human parents (P&H) and the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. Tpops became an Electric Warrior to light the darkness in the war of consciousness. He hopes that some of these notes inspire you in an age of digital death, just as his homies in the Innerpulse tribe inspired him to create beauty rather than destroy it.
The Album
The seven tracks on the Innerpulse LP are constituted by face-melting guitar and bass riffs, which if repeated any more than what was necessary, would force the “stoner rock” categorization down upon them. However, these relatively short compositions, cored by Glassian tuplets, Acadian and Scottish riff-work, and Afro-Latin rhythms, upset the genre’s rubric for what a stoner ought to thwunk to, providing her, instead, with a scorching and unpredictable soundtrack for her astral voyage.
