Tiny Magnetic Pets have always occupied a fascinating space within modern synth-pop, but with their latest offering, they sound positively colossal. Based between Dublin and Belfast, they return with “Lost My Guiding Light (Again)”. Vocalist Paula Gilmer, drummer Eugene Somers and keyboardist, guitarist and songwriter Sean Quinn are here joined by bassist Seamus Quinn, taking one of the standout moments from their Deluxe/Debris era and transforming it into something that feels both emotionally urgent and dancefloor-ready.

As the first glimpse of the forthcoming Astralux EP, they do not merely revisit the past, but rather catapult them into the future. Like CHVRCHES at their most euphoric, Moloko at their most adventurous, or Underworld when melody locks into the stream of momentum, Tiny Magnetic Pets deliver electronic music with genuine emotional gravity.

Built around shimmering synth architecture, an irresistible pulse and soaring melodic hooks, “Lost My Guiding Light (Again)” explores uncertainty without ever surrendering to it. Paula Gilmer’s commanding vocal performance provides the emotional anchor, balancing vulnerability with quiet defiance as Sean Quinn layers luminous synthesizers and textured guitar into a widescreen production that constantly evolves. Eugene Somers’ dynamic percussion drives the track with live energy rather than machine precision, while Seamus Quinn’s bass gives the arrangement propulsion and warmth that keeps the song grounded even as it reaches for the stars. There are moments that evoke the grounded futurism of Björk, the stellar electronic landscapes of Gwenno, and the cinematic sweep of contemporary synthwave, yet Tiny Magnetic Pets remain unmistakably themselves.

Since emerging in 2015, Tiny Magnetic Pets have steadily built a formidable reputation, earning early support from Blitz Club legend Rusty Egan before forging a close relationship with OMD’s Andy McCluskey that led to European tours supporting the synth-pop pioneers. Along the way they’ve shared stages with Human League, Midge Ure, VNV Nation, Dave Keuning, Michael Rother, Wolfgang Flür, Mesh and Killing Joke, developing into a live act renowned for transforming their material into immersive electronic spectacles. That fearless approach explains why their new single feels less like a remix and more like a statement of intent from a band entering a new ambitious chapter.

The production only amplifies that sense of scale. Mixed and mastered by Tim Dorney, whose pedigree stretches from Republica to Flowered Up and Tin Gun, the single balances pristine contemporary sonics with the warmth and melodic instincts of classic synth-pop. The Astralux EP itself expands the vision further with two remixes of “Low Places” from legendary producer and DJ Paul Dakeyne, whose decades-long career remixing artists from New Order to Erasure and The Cure has earned him iconic status within electronic music. Together, Dorney and Dakeyne elevate Tiny Magnetic Pets into the company they have long deserved, framing the band’s songwriting with productions that feel both timeless and exhilaratingly modern.

“Lost My Guiding Light (Again)’”may be the keystone of their new EP, but it is the sound of a band confidently stepping into a larger arena. The song pulses with hope amid uncertainty, inviting listeners to find their own guiding light while delivering one of the year’s most compelling synth-pop anthems.
