PAPER ANTHEM- “COELACANTH”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Indie-rock band Paper Anthem is back with “Coelacanth” the first single from their upcoming EP due out later this year.
Produced by Danny Monk, “Coelacanth” takes its listener on a surrealist adventure, starting with eerie piano chords and otherworldly synths before evolving into a lively indie-rock crescendo. The track’s dreamlike quality is purposeful, echoing the turbulent relationship at its heart. Written during his time living in Seattle, frontman Joseph Hitchcock offers a raw portrayal of his emotions during a turbulent relationship where he and his partner found solace in one another, despite a lack of honesty. This mix of conflicting emotions creates a sound that’s both intimate and intense, reflecting the influence of noughties indie pioneers like LCD Soundsystem, Foals, and Bloc Party. The outcome is a vibrant indie pop/rock anthem that strikes a balance between nostalgia and contemporary energy.
Of the track, Joseph Hitchcock said “This song started in my head in 2018, as just the piano intro, the low C, going up to the G and back down to the C forever. Some of the lyrics came then, as well. I was living in an apartment in Seattle’s Chinatown with over 10 other people, it wasn’t a great place to live, but I was getting on with this girl who also lived there who was a teacher and an escort on the side, and since marijuana is legal there we were both just sort of experimenting and watching anime and one thing led to another and I still don’t know how I feel about the whole thing, so I wrote a surreal song because my feelings are still murky. I don’t even know if I wanted a relationship from it but I don’t think she did and everything got so confusing. I hope she’s doing alright.”
