HOT MUSTARD – “HALL OF GIANTS”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Hot Mustard amps up the energy with “Hall of Giants,” a punchy mix of boom-bap and retro soul that kicks off their upcoming album, Monster Season. The track features Via Mardot’s ethereal theremin, complemented by tubular bells and the unique sound of the Marxophone, while drummer AJ Hall brings some extra funky soul grooves. Local drummer Wes Powers adds to the rhythm section, with dynamic horn arrangements written by Jordan McLean (Antibalas) on trumpet and featuring Dave “Smoota” Smith (TV on the Radio) on trombone. Ross Bogan’s syncopated organ chops add serious potency with Powell and Carusos holding down their usual guitars and synths within the classic Hot Mustard style of production. The song’s video, crafted by Jack Powell, is built entirely from archived footage from the ’30s to ’50s into a striking moving collage.
ARTIST QUOTE
“The video was pieced together out of 53 public domain films through a video college process that I’ve developed through years of experimentation. It’s not a concrete narrative like most of my other pieces, but more of a stream of consciousness or fragmented dream left open to interpretation.”
