BOSH ROTHMAN – “BIG ME”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Los Angeles based songwriter & drummer Bosh Rothman has shared his new single “Big Me.” The track is a cover/reimagining of a Foo Fighters track, and is the latest preview of Rothman’s new EP Joshua out May 8th via Broken Sticks Records.
Rothman explains of the track: “Dave Grohl has said this song is about feeling small and seeking validation—something I deeply relate to in the music community, often feeling like an outsider, always looking in and wanting to feel wanted.”
The forthcoming EP is a tender, forthright swirl of Americana, folk, and indie rock–a peek into Rothman’s life during a period of hardship and sadness. Featuring one original from Rothman, “Joshua,” the five other tracks are covers/reimaginings of tracks by The Carpenters, Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl, and more.
Rothman explains: “I slipped even deeper into a dark place. I was eating too much, sleeping all day, and living in constant pain-mentally and emotionally. I needed help. I needed a way out of a darkness that so many people suffer through quietly. Remembering the stories of my two heroes Ringo Starr and Dave Grohl (who he met while recording at Grohl’s 606 Studio), both having the loss of their two bands (Nirvana and The Beatles), they put their pain and love into music & created new life-long projects. It inspired me to get out of the funk I was in and make art.
Driving through Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills, frustrated with myself, isolated, let down by people, and wrestling with my own internal battles, I found myself humming: ‘Even if the users, ghosters, and abusers let you down, it’s not on you.’
I went straight into the studio and quickly laid down a demo. Within two hours, I realized I was writing a letter to myself —a reminder that everything was going to be okay. That became my first single, ‘Joshua.’ From there, I decided to reimagine my favorite songs by my favorite drummers and turn the idea into a full EP.
This record is dedicated to everyone who is suffering quietly. You’re not alone. Much love.”
Joshua was mixed by Jake Supple, and engineered by Lawrence Rothman and Supple. Guitars, keys, and bass by Joe Kennedy (Dave Grohl, Kim Gordon, Yves Tumor), guitars by Sam Stewart (Lo Moon Band), background vocals by Lily Elise (Chappell Roan, Don Henley, Miley Cyrus) and Andrea Wasse (Nightjacket)
