Veteran Nashville songwriter Drew Ryder Smith, whose songs have been recorded by artists including Merle Haggard and Randy Houser, returns with his new single, “Memory,” a hard-driving country rocker that turns one of the genre’s most familiar themes on its head. Fueled by a growling resonator guitar, pounding rhythm, and an unmistakable streak of defiance, the song gives voice to the memory itself, taunting its subject with the promise that it isn’t going anywhere. “Memory” was born from a moment of creative frustration after a publisher labeled him a “one-trick pony.” Smith went home, picked up a resonator guitar “because it sounded angry,” and the song quickly took shape. Produced by Glenn A. Tabor III and featuring backing vocals from Elvie Shane and Charnel Allen, “Memory” transforms that frustration into a bold, brooding anthem that refuses to let go.
