UNTER STRØM – “ORYNTH”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
UNTER STRØM’s debut single “Orynth” arrives as a striking introduction to a project rooted in both experience and forward-thinking ambition. Formed by Alex Gonzales (Matte Blvck) and John Kunkel (The New Division, John Grand), the duo brings together deep histories in electronic and alternative music, channeling those influences into a sound that feels both polished and exploratory. “Orynth” leans into a cinematic approach to techno and melodic house, blending industrial textures with atmospheric depth. The track unfolds with a sense of tension and release, moving between brooding intensity and moments of euphoric lift. Its structure reflects a highly collaborative process, with evolving layers and detailed production that keep the listener engaged throughout.
The involvement of mixer Aaron Short adds a refined finish, giving the track clarity and scale without sacrificing its darker, more immersive edge. There’s a clear balance here between underground grit and melodic sophistication, positioning UNTER STRØM comfortably between club-driven energy and more expansive, headphone-oriented listening.
As a debut, “Orynth” succeeds in establishing a distinct identity. It not only highlights the duo’s chemistry but also signals a strong creative direction, one that merges technical precision with emotional weight. The result is a compelling first statement that suggests UNTER STRØM is poised to carve out a meaningful space within the darker spectrum of electronic music.
ARTIST QUOTE
Speaking about the track, Kunkel goes behind the creative process, “Orynth was either the third or fourth track we made, and by that point we were still in the early stages of discovering our sound. Alex sent me an early demo of Orynth, and my jaw dropped. I’d never heard anything like it and knew we had something truly special on our hands. The synth patterns, the drum groove really struck a chord with me and gave me all the ammunition to help create the breakdown.” – John Kunkel
“Coming into this project with John, I was stepping into unfamiliar territory. My background has always leaned more cinematic and vocal-driven, with a darker, more mechanical edge, and while there were elements of techno in my work, I hadn’t fully committed to that world. ‘Orynth’ was a real moment of growth for me. I stopped overthinking and just created something that felt true to my identity. When I sent it to John, and he turned it around the same day, elevating it in a way that felt completely aligned, it showed me how powerful this collaboration could be. There’s a lot of trust and mutual respect in what we’re building, and this track really feels like the foundation of what UNTER STRØM is becoming.” ~Alex Gonzales
