RORY McBRIDE – “THE AZURE KING”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
29-year-old American singer and poet Rory McBride creates a breed of soft psychedelic folk rock characterized by blues and spiritual music.
Most of his 20s were focused on a multidisciplinary career in the visual arts which took him to New York, Paris and Tokyo. However, the day he wrote his first song was a turning point. “The guitar was no longer an instrument, it was a portal to an all-encompassing artistic expression and I felt I had no choice but to reach for a new identity and assume a new name and a new style.”
“The Azure King” is a delicately crafted poetic trip that spookily conjures up the ghost of Jim Morrison. It’s as if Jim’s spoken word middle 8 from “The End” spawned a whole genre, spearheaded by this charmingly talented young bloke from rural Illinois.
McBride intentionally stamps his work with authenticity and simplicity. “It’s an intentional kind of austerity in the face of some of the fanaticism and excesses that characterize our times,” he remarks. “I advocate for a return to more simple and romantic thinking.”
