MORTAL PROPHETS – “JESUS IS COMING SOON”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Me and the Devil, the debut full-length LP from NYC-based experimental blues outfit The Mortal Prophets (led by John Beckmann), is finally out tomorrow, December 9.
Sonically, the bold, shape-shifting songbook of Me and the Devil is a softer, more poetic record, reflecting Beckmann’s love of everything from primitive blues to the raucous punk of Suicide to the ethereal ambient sequences of German electronica. It features contemporary reimaginings of tracks that, to Beckmann and countless others, shaped “America’s primal scream” — this includes takes on recordings from classic blues to traditional folk and gospel. To bring the record to life, Beckmann joined forces with Irish musician and producer William Declan Lucey (Rubyhorse, Leftbank), and collaborated with Morphine’s Dana Colley, vocalist Aoibheann Carey-Philpott, and more.
To help celebrate the release of Me and the Devil, we are pleased to share “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” one of the currently unreleased tracks off the LP.
Speaking on the track, Beckmann wrote:
“‘Jesus Is Coming Soon’ is a poignant song by Blind Wille Johnson. It’s especially relevant today as we pass through the Covid epidemic, slightly over 100 years later.
It was recorded in a temporary studio set up in Dallas on December 5, 1928; The lyrics are about the 1918 flu pandemic. An influenza pandemic of unprecedented venom, the Spanish flu swept the world between February 1918 and April 1920. The pandemic killed 50 to 100 million – three to five percent of the world’s population – making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history. The gospel song explains that the pandemic is God’s warning ‘to turn away from evil and seek the Lord and pray.’”
The Mortal Prophets’ debut LP is out tomorrow via all DSPs. Stay tuned for more new music from The Mortal Prophets in 2023.
