BLEEDER – “SWALLOWING SOUND”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Bleeder’s Shelby Smoak is no stranger to creating art amidst health scares. Dealing with hemophilia and an HIV-positive diagnosis, Smoak channeled his situation into a memoir, Bleeder, released in 2013. After a warm reception, Smoak felt the exploration on the subject wasn’t complete, leading to take on songwriting to “articulate the inarticulate.”
Enter Bleeder’s “Swallowing Sound,” the first single from the project’s upcoming Crisis EP due out in July. Crisis serves as both the continued document of Smoak’s health journey as well as a commentary on the COVID-19 age, as evidenced by the sweeping shoegaze of “Swallowing Sound.” Spill is proud to premiere the audio below ahead of the song’s official release on Friday and ahead of Crisis‘s release on July 30th.
Artist Quote
“Swallowing Sound’ is about trying to find meaning and faith in a dark place, so while I didn’t want to overtly equate music with something like the eucharist, the nod is still there, I think.”
