2018 Juno Award Nominations
@ The Great Hall, Toronto
February 6, 2018
The 2018 road to the Junos kicked off this morning at The Great Hall in Toronto, where this year’s Juno nominees were announced at a press conference hosted by CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) and the CBC. The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at the 47th annual Juno Awards to be held in Vancouver on March 25. The event will take place at Rogers Arena, and will be broadcast and live streamed via CBC, and hosted by Michael BublΓ©. Performances have been confirmed for this year’s ceremony and include Jessie Reyez, Daniel Caesar and Hedley, with more performances to be announced in the weeks to come. The Barenaked Ladies will also be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during this year’s Juno Awards show.
The nominations were announced this morning in a media event held at The Great Hall in Toronto, emceed by CBC host Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe, (Radio 2 Weekend Morning, Radio 2 Top 20, Canada Live, This Is My Music). Attendees were treated to opening and closing sets by Vancouver DJ and nominee Felix Cartel.
Heather Conway, Executive Vice President of CBC, took the stage to announce a number of initiatives led by the CBC. The Awards ceremony will be broadcasting live from coast to coast for the first time, live streaming to the entire world on cbcmusic.ca, Facebook, and YouTube,Β bringing millions of viewers and listeners together at the same time to celebrate Canadian music. βOur commitment to the Junos and Canadian music does not begin and end with the broadcast. As the home for Canadian music, CBC music is investing in new content and initiatives that will shine the spotlight on this country’s homegrown musical talent 365 days a yearβ. Today, the first of seven weekly Juno podcasts will be released. Additionally, the CBC will be sponsoring JUNOfest, featuring more than 100 bands at more than 15 venues, and also announced CBC Kids will be hosting the Junior Junos for Canada’s youngest music fans. Lastly, Conway announced that βSunday March 25 will known as Music Day on CBC, featuring a celebration of Canadian Music, on all platforms leading up to the Awards Broadcastβ.
Allan Reid, head of CARAS, was on hand to congratulate The Barenaked Ladies on their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and to announce that an exhibit will be created at the National Music Centre in Calgary at Studio Bell honoring 30 years of BNL music. He then addressed a number of newΒ CARAS initiatives that deal with gender equality, inclusion and respect. A scholarship has been created for women in the technical field of production and engineering. The βGood Night Outβ program has been created to promote safety and prevent sexual harassment at clubs during JUNOfest.
βIt’s an important time of change and we realize there are many important conversations to have and at CARAS we can support them, and we want to be part of that changeβ.
He then proceeded to announce this year’s recipient of the Humanitarian Award, Gary Slaight, as well as Denise Donlon who is the recipient of the Walt Grealis Award.
