NXNE 2024 – TENNYSON KING
@ BURDOCK BREWERY, TORONTO
JUNE 14, 2024
Tennyson King had the last set on Friday night at Burdock Brewery as part of NXNE. The Mississauga native held the crowd in quiet admiration as he serenaded them with a beautiful medley of songs from his discography. Amber bulbs lit the room, adding to the intimate environment and allowing King to engage personally with the audience. Between songs, King would tell stories about his time living in a van in Australia or about his recent trips to Asia, really cementing his surfer aura. King, who was born in Hong Kong, rotated between instruments throughout his set, performing with an acoustic guitar, a jazz guitar and a Zhongruan, a traditional Chinese instrument. He was joined on stage by Chris Noble, who played the keys, provided backup vocals and pulled out the melodica a few times to enchant the crowd. King’s vocal transitions captivated the audience while Noble’s expertise on the keys gave the whole set a psychedelic edge Together the duo was electric, creating a sense of comfort that remains unmatched at all the shows I’ve been to for NXNE. For the first time at the festival, an audience actually followed cues and sang wholeheartedly when instructed to do so. All around great vibes!
