Electric Island Festival 2017
@ 50 Commissioners’ Street, Toronto
July 1, 2017
The upside of throwing an electronic music festival in a parking lot is the acoustics. While the #150 Canada Day Electric Island moved to 50 Commissionerβs Street, near the Port Lands, due to ongoing flooding of the Toronto Island, the vibe remained with a bit of Hart Plaza mixed in.
Highlights include the dancing red and white-clad fans to Roman Flueglβs set in the rain, the sun returning for Recondite and Maceo Plex and the intimacy of the garden stage that stole audienceβs hearts. Here, locals Borzoo, Nadia, and Aleksandar Kojic opened up for Atish and Chaim β all artists delivered amazing performances.
Chaim closed the garden stage with Fleetwood Macβs βDreamsβ saying βgiven the rain, it felt like an appropriate send off.β. A phenomenal light show and pounding live techno from Ritchie Hawtin closed the main stage and the #150 Canada Day Electric Island.
Overall, it was another beautiful day, downpours aside, with excellent electronic music, delicious eats, drinks, boutiques and a strong attendance. A friend quipped it was like Electric Circus, given the location has hosted various circuses over the years. Well, I guess any music festival is a bit of a circus.
Nina Kraviz, Kink (live), Mano Le Tough, JackMaster, Deetron, Dam-Funk and locals Jonathan Rosa, Nature of Music, Greg Gow, Addy and Jeremy Stott play Electric Island Civic Day. Fingers crossed it will be an island affair but, if not, it will still be a great jam.
