SEARCHING FOR SOME PEACE OF MIND
A CONVERSATION WITH JAY WHISS
Jay Whiss, Toronto rapper and member of the hip hop collective Prime Boys is ready to make his next move, and plans to make an impact. Following the success of Koba World and making waves in the industry by being featured on Murda Beatz’s 2016 mixtape, he is about to release his debut album Peace of Mind.
Peace of Mind is extremely personal for Whiss. “It’s a steady theme of my life without music. “It is what I’m searching for, you like know what drives me on a day to day basis, where I want to end up”. “This project is a more of a look into me as a person not like just some artist. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, so if I can relay it in a message that anyone can take from it and it can help them get through their day to day that’s all that matters”.
Whiss had some very specific ideas about what he wanted before starting out. “I wanted this project to be very concise and very personal with a classic sound. I did not want to chase another sound.” “Every song I make is open-minded. I wait for something that draws me in and the song is my first emotion or feeling that I am going through”. “Each song then becomes a puzzle piece and the songs [he] creates have to fit this puzzle”.
The creative process is different for each artist, and each artist has different goals going in about what they want listeners to know about themselves in the end. Ultimately, Jay Whiss wants people to understand that he is “normal at the end of the day, nothing is a façade. I am just being myself and that’s what drives me”.
Having released the album Jay Whiss is getting ready to go on tour to promote it. “I definitely plan to do some shows. Given the big cities in Canada, Canadian shows [are] 100% happening and as long as people wanna hear me I am there 100%”.
