THUNDERPUSSY
WEST
TRASH CASUAL
Thunderpussy, one of the most electrifying bands to emerge from the last decade, have returned with their second full-length album, West, their first collection of new music since their 2019 EP, Milk It. The 11-track record sees the band build upon their distinctively modern sound reminiscent equally for the golden era of ‘70s rock and Seattle, circa ’92.
West opens with the slow burning “I Can Do Better”, a song that grows from a gentle and sparse soundscape into a jangly rocker led by a colourful harmonic structure and accented by the use of additional strings. Not only do the symphonic elements on the opening song grow with each section, but are an integral element heard throughout much of West. The following track, “Firebreather”, on the other hand, is an up-tempo and highly rhythmic track that is driven by a displaced beat. Clocking in under three minutes, “Firebreather” is certain to be a highlight among Thunderpussy’s impressive live show.
Across West, Thunderpussy feels as though they are expanding their sound with a more experimental approach to their songwriting. The most noticeable addition to this is the use of strings. However, songs like the lush ballad “West” and the ominous “Misty Morning” demonstrate a significant step forward for the band as songwriters. The former sees vocalist Molly Sides bellow emotionally over developing strings in a manner that feels reminiscent for Jeff Buckley. The latter, is a sludgy and doom heavy track played out across three movements/ The first of which is a haunting, riff heavy song that pulls equally from Eastern melodies as it does Soundgarden, before transitioning into an ambient middle section that develops into seamlessly into a climatic conclusion. Additional highlights include “N.E.D.” and “In Your Honour”.
Thunderpussy sound refined on their latest album. While continuing to balance the central aspects of their sound, a modern take of both classic and ‘90s rock, the band has elevated their work with an orchestral edge that prevails through most of the album. As a result, West sees Thunderpussy chart new territory as their most eclectic release to date, making for an exciting musical experience.
