Tame Impala
InnerSpeaker (10th Anniversary Edition)
Interscope Records
Although it is technically now the 11th anniversary of Tame Impala’s debut LP, we really can’t complain anytime Kevin Parker releases something.
The InnerSpeaker box set which is spread across 4 LP’s, is an absolute delight for the Tame Impala mega-fan. Discs 1 and 2 are the original mixes of the LP while Discs 3 and 4 are the extra supplements we are all wanting to hear.
Disc 3 features both brand new mixes of “Alter Ego” and “Runaway Houses City Clouds”, as well as two dreamy instrumentals of “It’s Not Meant to Be” and “Why Don’t You Make Up Your Mind.
Disc 4, which features live jam tracks and demos, is by far the most interesting. The demos are captivating sketches of many album tracks in their rough stage and some that did not quite make the final cut.
“Lucidity (Isolated Guitar Riff / Demo)” is a particular standout track, especially Parker’s untamed fuzzed-out guitar riffage.
“Island Walking (Instrumental)” is another hidden gem that was left on the cutting room floor. The Hendrix-like fuzz riffs, which are as equally gnarly as the aforementioned.
Listening to “Tell My Where You Are” and “She’s Not the Only One I Love”, while both enjoyable, its obvious why they did not make the final cut.
InnerSpeaker, one of the best debut albums in recent history, is certainly deserving of an expanded edition. If you own the original LP, it isn’t a necessity to to add to your collection, however it is certainly worth checking out some of these never before heard gems.
