Just recently, music critics are starting to confirm that shoegaze in all of its shapes and forms is stronger that ever, and L.A. four-piece Starling are here to confirm that fact with their latest EP Plexus.

The project started out back in 2023 as a solo effort of lead singer and guitarist Kasha Souter, whose vocals and guitar sound permeate the sound of the band. They dub that sound as soft heaviness, something that fits the five songs here quite nicely, as it is the sound that is more akin to early Teenage Fanclub rather than the more dream pop-oriented one some might have expected.

It is all loud and often brash guitars combined with the subtle sound of the vocals, with all the musical elements picked from elsewhere but turned into quite a unique sound that is often hard to pin down where it is coming from. Quite an achievement from a band that has only three EP’s behind them.
