Back in the early 70s, all things connected with any form of pop in rock music was scorned by a slew of rock critics, usually labeled as ‘simplistic.’ Well, some 50 years or so on, that ‘simplistic’ as they called it is still around, with cyclical ups and downs, one up seeming to come around right now.
One of the riders of that wave are Birmingham, Alabama quartet Slack Times, who, with one previous album and EP, are now releasing a new album, simply titled Casting.
With the band’s lineup shifting up and down, from a five-piece to a trio, and then now working as a quartet, there was never anything simplistic in their music, as focusing on creating a fully melody-oriented sound based on guitars and dual vocals can actually be quite tricky and demanding if you want to make your music work. Oh, and any remotely good.
The thing though with Slack Times is that the relatively brief nine tracks here have been above all lovingly crafted to a sort of pop/rock perfection that works, any time you spin this thing.
