NAN MACMILLAN
FROM BOTH EYES
INDEPENDENT
Some would say that these days that singer-songwriters are a dime a dozen. Of course, when releasing your music has become so easy without even having a record label, such proliferation is imminent.
So how do you distinguish yourself? Basically, there are two main approaches–go minimalistic, you, a single instrument and your music and lyrics, or throw in as much as you can where the instrumentation and arrangements are concerned.
Yet, unless you don’t have enough talent and inventiveness (combined they make individuality), you will probably never swim, and sinking is inevitable.
Yet, there is that balanced road somewhere between the two, which Brooklyn singer-songwriter Nan Macmillan takes on her debut album From Both Eyes.
That middle shouldn’t mean middling, but a balance between minimalistic and ‘all in’ and Macmillan does find that balance here, showing that she has ample individuality and quality to stand on her own merits. The 10 songs here have all the elements of high quality you would expect from any singer-songwriter that aspires to be among the prominent ones. Macmillan has a chance.
