SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE MODERN SAVAGE – UNWILLING PARTICIPANTS

The Modern Savage
Unwilling Participants
The Modern Savage
RATING

Lacking the cookie cutter style of music we see too often in the music industry, The Modern Savage is bringing a new sound to the stage. Founded in 2011, the group is a five-member pop/rock group hailing from Anchorage, Alaska. With lead vocals by Jenni May, she has John Cripps, Matt Eley, Ivan Molesky, and David Devlin backing her up, and ultimately creating the band’s independent and new age sound.

This is the band’s third studio album. It is their biggest collection of songs yet, with thirteen in total, and Unwilling Participants has set the bar high for themselves when they go to create their next album.

As the thirteen track album progresses, no two songs are the same, giving fans 40 minutes of amazing content, and a song for any mood. Unwilling Participants features a verity of different musical styles all equally heart felt, yet ranging from up tempo indie rock songs, to delicate and dark lyrical and rhythmic combinations. Preaching underlying strength and resistance the lyrics can be taken as a form of motivation.

The debut track ‘Pull Me’ features the reoccurring lyric “how do you make love stay?”, which is a quote Jenni May Toro drew from the Tom Robbins novel ‘Still Life with Woodpecker’. This up-tempo song carries the album’s underlying theme of relationships, and the challenges that come along with them, while being undeniably catchy. It will no doubt be stuck in your head after the first time you listen.

Overall, this is a great album that has a song for any occasion. It certainly has set the bar high.
