Toronto’s elegant noise punk trio METZ are back with a new LP consisting of non-album singles, rarities, and B-sides. Automat brings all these songs together in one place for the first time and will surely be a delightful surprise for fans that have never heard some of these tracks before.
Not only has the band made all of these songs available together but they’ve also had them remastered by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service. This really makes all the songs flow like a complete album and gives them that extra punch that we’ve come to expect from METZ. Automat also contains the 7-inch version of “Negative Space” and a demo of “Wet Blanket” which are obviously more raw and dirty sounding than the polished versions that made it onto their first LP but still sound great. It’s unfortunate that the band weren’t able to include an unreleased song or two to really complete the album.
Newer fans that may not have heard these songs before will have plenty to soak up including the standout tracks “Soft Whiteout” and “Ripped on the Fence” that are some of the best songs the band have written. And if you’re a long-time fan waiting patiently for the band to finish writing their fourth full-length LP, this will certainly keep you busy until then.
