SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: MEMPHIS MAY FIRE – SHAPESHIFTER

Memphis May Fire

MEMPHIS MAY FIRE
SHAPESHIFTER
RISE RECORDS

Memphis May Fire boasts a rich and dynamic history in the metalcore scene, having played a pivotal role in shaping the future of the genre. Throughout their journey, marked by both exhilarating highs and challenging lows, the band has consistently transformed their personal struggles into empowering musical moments. Albums like The Hollow, Challenger, and Blood & Water serve as dominant and compelling examples of their creativity, revealing that when they dedicate time to crafting a record, unique and powerful magic unfolds from these experiences.

While Remade In Misery highlighted their knack for crafting an enjoyable auditory experience without necessarily making monumental impacts, some fans found themselves longing for a return to the band’s heavier, nostalgic roots. Those earlier works were characterized by infectious choruses and bone-crushing breakdowns that linger in the memory. As Shapeshifter, their latest release, hits the airwaves, fans are left to ponder: will Memphis May Fire be able to tap back into that electrifying energy once more?

Memphis May Fire has successfully recaptured their earlier sound and then some with their latest release, Shapeshifter. True to its name, Shapeshifter showcases a kaleidoscopic evolution in the band’s sound, pushing the limits of their creative potential. The result is an album that is not only engaging and entertaining but also reflects the vibrant energy of a band that is back to crafting moments that instill confidence and showcase their lasting presence in the scene.

From the outset, tracks like “Chaotic”, “Infection”, and “Overdose” featuring metalcore luminaries Blindside serve as striking demonstrations of the band’s powerful return to form. These songs reconnect with their heavier roots, resonating through one’s headphones like the comforting presence of an old friend. As one listens, the nostalgia slowly seeps in, bringing back fond, heavy, metallic, and agitated memories, while simultaneously inviting you to embark on new adventures together, enriching one’s musical journey.

Mullins showcases an impressive range of vocal talent throughout these tracks, delivering powerful screams that have become a hallmark of his style. He skillfully weaves in intriguing rap elements that effectively complement his aggressive vocal delivery, creating a dynamic listening experience. This melding of influences highlights the band’s evolution while honouring their past.

Moreover, Memphis May Fire demonstrates a remarkable resurgence by crafting moments of musical brilliance. Each track flows seamlessly into the next, infused with a palpable sense of confidence and comfort. This collection of songs has reignited a burning passion within their sound, but there is also a deliberate focus on allowing the cathodic and atmospheric tension in each piece to breathe. The heavier elements are meticulously balanced, creating a rich sonic landscape that invites one to delve deeper into the intricacies of their music. This careful attention to detail enhances the overall experience, making each listen an engaging and immersive emprise.

HONESTY ISN’T ALWAYS PRETTY – A CONVERSATION WITH MEMPHIS MAY FIRE

“Paralyzed”, “Hell Is Empty”, and “Necessary Evil” showcase the band’s extraordinary creative potential, marked by a seamless blend of innovation and musical diversity. While the band has proven their ability to craft experiences that highlight their artistic brilliance, since Blood & Water, it had been a rarity to witness such entertaining twists and turns of creative energies in quick succession. Shapeshifter exemplifies not only strong songwriting but also showcases polished production values that elevate each track. Something brilliant has happened here, where the guitar riffs and percussive energies feel more alive and dynamic, yet captivating and memorable against Mullins’ vocals, weaving throughout the songs with such finesse. Additionally, Mullins’ vocal versatility shines through, presenting a range of styles that further enhance their sound. While only halfway through the record, Shapeshifter represents a significant maturation in their artistry, as they have fully embraced and molded these elements, resulting in a compelling listening experience that is fresh and reflective of their signature style.

“The Other Side”, “Shapeshifter”, and “Versus” take a more emotional and melodic approach, effectively utilizing electronic elements alongside a trademark blend of intense, pained vocals and gravid guitars. Together, they create a nightmarish world filled with feelings of helplessness, pain, suffering, and defiance. In many ways, Memphis May Fire has built on the themes of questioning reality explored in Remade In Misery and has transitioned into darker and angrier territory. What does gaining self-awareness from such experiences mean? Why does it sometimes transform us into something we barely recognize? What does it mean to wrestle with these emotions while trying to avoid succumbing to despair that put you there in the first place? Memphis May Fire frequently explores this concept in their albums, but Shapeshifter stands out as it seems to convey these emotions from a more authentic perspective. Working mostly from Mullins’ home studio, this different approach has added a sense of comfort, depth, and resonance to their music, enhancing the new album’s overall listening experience.

As Shapeshifter ends with the final track, “Love Is War”, Memphis May Fire asserts their vitriol-fueled presence with one of their strongest finishers. Serving as a powerful culmination of everything that defines Memphis May Fire’s impressive impact on this album, Shapeshifter ends strong, successfully showcasing an album that has exceeded expectations with each track.

Shapeshifter represents a significant evolution in Memphis May Fire’s musical journey, setting a hopeful tone for their future. This album intricately weaves a narrative of hardship and emotional turmoil, exploring themes of misfortune and the struggle against despair. Despite being ensnared in a period of darkness, the band ultimately emerges into a realm of peace and healing. With Shapeshifter, Memphis May Fire re-establishes their presence in the music scene, delivering a compelling body of work that reflects their resilience and growth. It’s a powerful accent of their artistry and potential, proving that they always could produce this kind of profound record; it merely took time for them to navigate their path and reach this point. Welcome back, Memphis May Fire—you’ve shown us once again that your drive to inspire and entertain has not faltered but merely blossomed into something bigger and better. Whether it was a much-needed escape for personal reflection or a well-deserved break that has ignited Memphis May Fire’s revitalized spirit of courage and determination, the outcome is promising for the band’s trajectory this year. This renewed sense of fearlessness within the masterpiece that is Shapeshifter suggests that they are not only evolving but are also ready to tackle new challenges head-on, channeling their experiences into powerful music that resonates with their fans once again. As they move forward, it’s clear that their time away has reinvigorated their creativity and commitment, setting the stage for another exciting chapter in their journey.
