SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: LEON RAUM – BASEMENT MEDITATION

Leon Raum

LEON RAUM
BASEMENT MEDITATION
SONAR KOLLEKTIV

It might be that Basement Meditation is Leon Raum’s official debut EP, but this prolific German producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist has been around for a while and has worked with several live bands and participated in a number of projects that crossed over into as many genres as there are fingers on his hands, or maybe even more.

That experience and genre-crossing is felt in the four seemingly brief, but musically both intense and at the same time relaxed, instrumental compositions that combine his obviously expansive knowledge of both jazz and beats, with latter never overshadowing the musical complexity Raum packs his compositions here.

The EP plays like a series of musical snapshots that show where Raum’s musical state of the mind is at the moment, and at the same time, where it could take him on hopefully his next solo musical explorations.
