KYP HARNESS
KICK THE DUST
INDEPENDENT
After 30 years on the scene, you are free to call Kyp Harness a Canadian musical institution. Just take a look (and a listen) to a myriad of releases listed on his Bandcamp page and the fact that his take on the folk/roots music he creates, and you will get the (sound) picture.
In that respect, nothing much changes on his latest release Kick The Dust. With just the backing of Victor Bateman on bass and Blake Howard on drums backing Harness’ voice and guitar he is still able to create a full, engaging sound that complements his accent on lyrics that are no less engaging itself. Ranging anywhere from quiter moments of Creedence Clearwater Revival combined with Billy Bragg and touches of Will Oldham (Harness’ subtly wavering voice helps there) he is able to escape any traps such a ‘simple’ musical setup.
After all, simple is so hard to achieve in music to make it sound right, and Harness is surely able to do that on this album.
