SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: KYLIE V – CRASH TEST PLANE

Kylie V

KYLIE V
CRASH TEST PLANE
ROYAL MOUNTAIN RECORDS

Known for their exquisite vocals, authentically reflective songwriting, and ability to create a comforting, yet somber sound, Kylie V is quickly becoming one of the top young artists from Canada. They have been making huge strides in the local music scene in Vancouver, whose fan base has been massively growing in popularity. Kylie V’s sophomore album, Crash Test Plane, is a masterpiece and continues to exemplify their brilliant musicianship.

Kylie V’s brutally honest and diaristic songwriting on Crash Test Plane touches the depth of your soul. With the stunningly melancholic and poetic “Okanagan Peach”, they incorporate metaphors for growing up and past relationships. Kylie V’s delicate voice and the introspective lyrics of “Runaway” perfectly capture the raw emotions and vulnerability of falling in love with someone. In addition, “Anomaly” is a painfully devastating examination on heartbreak.

Instrumentally, Crash Test Plane sees Kylie V evolving sonically. One example is the title track, full of country influences and featuring tons of ‘twang’ in the instrumentation. Furthermore, “Song In Open D” has very intricate and layered guitar playing, a breathtaking atmosphere, and a gorgeous soundscape. Alternatively, “Year Of The Rabbit” takes the indie folk sound Kylie V is known for and expands upon it, making it more cinematic and grander. Fans of Sufjan Stevens and boygenius will fall in love with this track.

One of the main standouts from the album is the infectiously irresistible earworm “Wish I Was In Bed”. If you are not a Kylie V fan, this charming track reminiscent of 2000s pop rock will undoubtedly make you one, with its instantly catchy guitars, fun energy, sing-along lyrics, and lovely vocals. Despite exploring similar feelings to the rest of the album, the track has quite a different sound as it is more pop-sounding than the rest. The upbeat instrumentation is an excellent parallel to the bittersweet lyrics.

Another standout is the folksy indie rock ballad “Lucky Streak”, with the main highlight being the cathartically bright outro where Kylie V joyously sings, “’Cause I’m on a lucky streak”. This moment is definitely one of the best off of the record.

Overall, Kylie V’s Crash Test Plane flawlessly weaves together heartfelt vocals, gentle instrumentation, and introspective lyrics. Crash Test Plane is easily one of the best Canadian albums of 2024.
