SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: KAT VON D – MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN

Kat Von D

KAT VON D
MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN
KAT VON D

Stumbling across Kat Von D’s My Side of the Mountain, I was perplexed with what was on offer: “Kat Von D’s signature blend of disco goth, heavily influenced by synthwave, new wave, post-punk, and other iconic electronic sounds of the 80s, sets her music apart.” Indeed… setting her apart. Von D, an apparent cultural enigma wrapped in controversy, delivers something pretty weighty and complex.

Von D’s album is a fascinating blend of contrasts, merging the upbeat disco rhythm with the sombre tones of industrial music. The tracks “Set Me On Fire” and “I’m A Machine” stand out for their raw energy and showcase Von D’s ability to push boundaries and explore different facets of sound. While the instrumentals carry a vibrant, synthetic ’80s vibe, the darker vocals add depth and complexity, creating a unique auditory experience.

Some tracks may evoke stronger emotions, like “Running Away,” which carries a weight that might not resonate with everyone. Yet, this emotional intensity is a testament to Von D’s artistic vision, crafting an album that’s not afraid to delve into the more sombre aspects of the human experience. Despite its darker themes, the album’s consistent tone and mood reflect a deliberate artistic choice, offering a glimpse into the artist’s inner world and leaving a lasting impression on the listener. It’s a bold statement in today’s music scene, unapologetically showcasing Von D’s creative range and emotional depth.

The track that I dig, “Vampire Love”, oozes a stellar Disco feel, providing a bit more of a sensual, smooth melody, and the music video is kinda cool, standing apart from the overall expected trajectory of this album. I will caveat that My Side Of The Mountain will evoke sadness for some players, so be mindful of how you engage.

About the Author
Victoria Love-Rainbow
I am an avid connoisseur of music experiences but never had the courage to share them until now. My inspiration comes from the '90s alternative and punk rock music I grew up listening to. Bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, Eve 6 and Everclear shaped my worldview and taste in music. I want to capture some of their energy and spirit in my stories. Thanks for checking out my bio and my work!
