Jessica Lee Morgan
Change The Record
Space Records
Jessica Lee Morgan returns with her fifth studio album. Change The Record is somewhat of a departure for Morgan as she returns to her love of electronic music, which was hinted at on her first studio I Am Not. For Change The Record, there is no hinting, she goes into electronic music and adapts it to her own style.
Change The Record is a truly solo effort by Morgan. She produced, wrote, and sang the entire album, with help from her partner, Christian Thomas, who also assisted with mixing and mastering, and also co-wrote “Play For Me”. But for all intents and purposes, this is a solo affair, and an important step in her career.
Change The Record opens with the powerful and energetic “Gotta Get Thru This”, which not only sets the tone, but makes it clear to the listener that this is Morgan taking a leap into a whole new sound. The pace continues with “If You Wanna Believe”, where she experiments with vocals and sounds here, but again, a basic dance number that is crying out for remixes. Morgan chills with “Comfort And Pain”, but even then it is electronic chill. It is very melodic and atmospheric and comes at the perfect moment. The only track that is reminiscent of a more ‘traditional’ sounding Jessica Lee Morgan song is the closing track, “It’s Ok”, a piano-based ballad, that is the perfect way to bring Change The Record to a close.
Jessica Lee Morgan continues to astound and surprise her fans and listeners. In some ways it is hard to believe that this is the same artist who released Forthright just last year, which is full of singer/songwriter style music. With Change The Record, Morgan wants to dance and move into other sounds and music. It is a good move, on her part.
