Walking the trails that can fall under the category of ‘singer-songwriter music’ can be quite a tricky one, particularly if you concentrate too much on yourself and your ‘pains’.

That doesn’t seem to be a problem for Brooklyn-based Jackie West and her latest album, aptly titled Close To The Mystery. Yes, West’s songwriting and particularly her vocals do get close to all things mysterious, as she goes on to combine her dream pop inclinations with jazzy touches and some late-night, even noir lyrics that fit her sound almost perfectly.

At the same time there is so much musical variation here, through West’s songwriting and arrangements as well as touches added by a series of collaborators who appear on the album to make it a refined, sophisticated musical experience. A very late night one, at that.
