SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF – THE PAST IS STILL ALIVE

Hooray For The Riff Raff

HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF
THE PAST IS STILL ALIVE
NONESUCH RECORDS

The Past Is Still Alive is the latest release from Roots/Americana artist Hurray for the Riff Raff (AKA Alynda Segarra). Following their 2022 album Life on Earth, Segarra began working on The Past Is Still following the death of their father, in March 2023. Although the recording was created during a time of personal grief, the result is a multi-faceted work which is at times both bleak and uplifting, but which is always real.

Musically, this album is comfort incarnate. Presenting their memorable, timeless-sounding tunes, Segarra has created a special collection, indeed. With varied subject material, including memories of childhood road trips, the ravages of addiction, and a buffalo stampede as a metaphor for a relationship, Segarra draws the listener in with their warm and honest voice, and deeply intelligent and thoughtful lyrics.

The Past Is Still Alive is very unified in sound and theme, showcasing Segarra’s songs well. The project is deftly produced by Brad Cook, whose production and arrangement choices never get in the way of the songs. The album is also elevated by contributions from Conor Oberst, Meg Duffy, Anjimile, and S.G. Goodman.

Whether with the smooth, mid-tempo heartache of “Alibi”, the plaintive yet sweet “Buffalo”, or the roots rock of “Vetiver”, the artist takes us on an odyssey of place and time, of emotion and spirit. While they write from a personal point of view, Segarra’s lyrics are very relatable. It does not hurt that their words are wrapped up in beautiful melodies.

Make no mistake: Alynda Segarra has created a true gem with this release. Such a strong showing from this artist places them firmly among the great singer-songwriters of this century. This album deserves your attention.
