Gorillaz
Cracker Island
Parlophone Records
When it comes to collaborations, Gorillaz is probably the best match for an artist to make new music with. This year, the famous virtual band surprised us with Cracker Island, a 10-track album featuring notable musicians and a whole trip of sounds and musical genres. Being their eighth record, Albarn continues to expand the groupβs horizons and reputation.
The first tracks follow an upbeat and energetic symphony, almost feeling like pop-ish material. The drum machines and synths are consistent and solid, and the soft backup vocals blend in well with 2Dβs sore voice. However, Tame Impala and Booty Brownβs participation in βNew Goldβ makes the record adopt a psychedelic sound. Continuing forward, the next songs set a nostalgic aura that reminds of the old Gorillaz days. βTormentaβ, the stellar piece according to many, is easily a reflection of Bad Bunnyβs essence. With smooth melody transitions and recalling the Puerto Rican latest album Un Verano Sin Ti, this tune is one of the most famous of the record. The final track βPossession Islandβ gives an emotional closure thanks to the harmonic synch between the piano and the acoustic guitar. Moreover, both Albarn and Beckβs voices complement each other magnifically.
Overall, Gorillazβs remarkable feature this time, besides their new cult-themed production, was their elite selection of artists to collab with. If you are an old-time fan, you may find this record a mainstream one. Whereas, if you are just getting into them, you will totally enjoy listening through all songs.
