Gabrielle Shonk
Across The Room
Arts & Crafts
Some record labels just have a great sense what fits into their artist roster and what level of music quality passes the muster. That’s a sure way to make as few misses as possible, if any.
Arts & Crafts seem to have that sense, and Across The Room, the second album by Gabrielle Shonk, just goes on to prove it.
Sure, you can find a good-sounding singer songwriter, even around the next corner. But reaching one whose music goes beyond run-of-the-mill acoustic stuff, music that touches on more than one genre, and whose lyrics make sense when heard in the context of the music itself is both and art and craft in itself.
Still, it is up to the artist to prove themselves, and here Shonk definitely does that. She obviously has an extensive knowledge of not just modern pop but soul and R&B as well, with which she infuses into her music. At the same time, as with many singer songwriters, her lyrics are deeply personal, but also transcend that personal element so that they can resonate more with the listener than just the artist, in this case, herself.
Suave and sophisticated, to say the least.
