SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: FRANK ENE – CRUEL À L’AMOUR

Frank Ene

Frank Ene
Cruel à l’amour
Independent

Late great Serge Gainsbourg was an excellent experimenter with genres and musical styles, yet he possibly didn’t have a chance to combine his key musical and lyrical elements with modern electronic music – anything from Depeche Mode and Giorgio Moroder to Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem.

But don’t worry, it seems that Frank Ene, an up and coming left-field artist, has struck gold with such a combination in a style that combines Gainsbourg’s musical and lyrical histrionics with a touch of Leonard Cohen to boot on his latest album “Cruel à l’amour” .

Combining some old electronic moves with those modern ones, and lyrics both in French and English, Ene is able to come up with a brew that is both familiar and new, something that is both fresh and innovative.

Speaking about the inspirations for the album, Ene responds with the lyrics: “Rage, alcohol, nicotine, grief, squalor, mental chaos, and nothingness”.

Wasn’t aware that nothingness has so much substance.
