EKKSTACY’s self-titled album is an explosion of sad punk, mixed with shoegaze and surf-rock. The BC-based artist combines depressive auras with synth-pop melodies that change from song to song, giving the record the iconic sound of his previous works. In addition, tracks featuring The Kid LAROI and Trippie Redd explore another side of the singer’s musical vision.
As mentioned before, the nostalgic vibe is a distinctive trait from EKKSTACY’s tunes. The record seems musically linear, as it keeps a constant deepness in both guitar melodies and vocals. “luv of my life” recalls to an extent the Misery record, thanks to the loud voice and the punk-ish beats. However, “fuck” is a song that possesses a shoegaze essence blended with alternative rock sounds, making it a loud but easy track to listen to.
“alright” featuring The Kid LAROI explores trap rhythms that give the song a whole new aura. The Kid LAROI’s part stands out significally, nevertheless, it makes for a great duo with EKKSTACY, whereas in “problems” featuring Trippie Redd, the mood is way more serene than the other tracks, though the chaos is still sensed. This same melodical situation happens with one of the final tunes “the headless horseman lost his way”. Here, the acoustic guitar starts marking the closure of the album.
The record reflects a multi-faceted sound. The balance between loudness, chaos, and somehow serenity is what makes this album so interesting to listen to. It tours different music genres and states of mind, all of them approaching solitude and sadness. Despite the latter, it is an enjoyable album.
