SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DEAD POET SOCIETY – MONARCH

Dead Poet Society

DEAD POET SOCIETY
MONARCH
SPINEFARM RECORDS

From beginning to end, Dead Poet Society creates an atmosphere that feels heavy, emotional, and almost unsettling in the best possible way. It is an album that doesn’t simply play in the background but demands your attention and pulls you into the world the band has created.

Emotionally intense from start to finish, Monarch feels like a window into the more vulnerable side of Dead Poet Society. There is a rawness woven throughout the record that makes each song feel deeply personal. Rather than keeping their emotions at a distance, the band allows them to sit front and centre, creating moments that feel both powerful and intimate.

What makes the album especially interesting is the sense that Dead Poet Society is still evolving. Monarch offers a taste of an evolving sound, showing a willingness to explore new ideas without losing the identity that makes the band recognizable. There is a sense of experimentation throughout the record, as though the band is continuing to figure out just how far they can push themselves creatively.

SPILL FEATURE: A CROWN MADE OF TEETH, NOT GOLD – A CONVERSATION WITH JACK UNDERKOFLER OF DEAD POET SOCIETY

But perhaps the most compelling aspect of Monarch is the insight it provides into the band themselves. Listening to the album feels like getting to know Dead Poet Society beyond the music. Their personalities, emotions and creative instincts seem to find their way into the songs, making the record feel less like a polished product and more like a genuine representation of who they are.

The album doesn’t rely solely on loud moments or obvious emotional peaks. Instead, it creates a lingering feeling. One that follows you even after the music stops. There is beauty in that darkness, and Dead Poet Society embraces it without hesitation.

Monarch feels like a snapshot of a band in motion. It captures where Dead Poet Society are now while leaving the door open for where they might go next. Emotionally intense, haunting and deeply personal, the album offers listeners more than just new music. It offers a glimpse into the people behind it and a taste of a sound that continues to evolve.

Mercedes is a Toronto native with a huge passion for photography and creative writing. Her love of being behind the lens has given her the opportunity to capture captivating images for national campaigns and earned her publications in renowned international magazines. Beyond her photographic pursuits, Mercedes is an avid attendee of concerts, immersing herself in the live music experience and documenting it from the photo pit. While her musical tastes lean towards rock alternative, she also embarks on an indie rock journey, and on a day to day, she also indulges in coffee to an extent that rivals the Gilmore Girls, while her Italian heritage instilled a lifelong love for pasta, meatballs, and pizza (as long as it’s gluten-free and vegan).
