SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CHARLIE EDWARD – PUSHING MY LUCK

Charlie Edward

CHARLIE EDWARD
PUSHING MY LUCK
ADA/WARNER MUSIC CANADA

When not sharing the stage with Big Wreck, Joe Perry, Mötley Crüe, or Greta Van Fleet, Toronto’s Charlie Edward has spent much of the last year writing and recording the follow-up to his 2025 debut, Let Me Go. The result is Pushing My Luck, a five-song EP that lives up to the buzz surrounding the up-and-coming rocker.

Pushing My Luck opens with the lush guitars and melodies of “What I Know.” The track song feels like an odd choice for an opener given its mid-tempo pace and mellow tone, that is until Edward, seemingly out of nowhere, absolutely belts outs the chorus, providing a catchy and explosive dynamic to the song. Immediately, Edward establishes himself as an incredibly gifted singer with a powerfully commanding voice that feels nostalgic for a long-gone era of rock. The following song, “Cruel & Beautiful,” hits hard. The jangly rocker sees Edward continue to prove his vocal prowess, supported by a dense wall of stacked guitars, including a solo from Eric Steckel.

As the EP continues, Edward delivers a sound that feels authentic to his artistry. With a clear influence from the larger-than-life records from Bon Jovi, Eddie Money, and post-reunion Aerosmith, From the winding riffs of “Magic Song” to the power ballad that is “Sweet September,” Pushing My Luck feels like an ‘80s rock revival while sporting a modern gloss. This is perhaps best seen in the closing title track. “Pushing My Luck” sounds like an unearthed song from Bryan Adams, demonstrating the anthemic nature at the core of Edward’s songwriting.

Edward evokes a feeling of ‘80s rock radio nostalgia on Pushing My Luck. The arrangements are excellently produced and prioritize the melody and vocal delivery. Every verse and chorus feels carefully crafted to showcase the very best of Edward and company. Pushing My Luck serves as a strong extension to what was previously established on Let Me Go, demonstrating Edward’s worth as Toronto’s next rock sensation.
