BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY
IRREVERSIBLE
ATO RECORDS

Navigating a second album is tricky business, especially when your first release and follow-up tour were received with such acclaim that you’re being tipped as the next big indie band. Such is the life Brigitte Calls Me Baby find themselves with as Irreversible comes into view.
Fortunately, they’ve stuck to a formula that works; the production is lush, but not overpowering (unlike some more recent albums that I reviewed more savagely), and the lyrics remain as pin-sharp and emotionally connecting as ever.
The sound is still very much ‘80s throwback’ for the most part (you can hear, among others, Morrissey and The Cure at the base of their sound), but they do venture into other territory as well. Both the rocky breeze of “Slumber Party” and “Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction” are highlights, and both show something different than the band has displayed at large so far.

SPILL FEATURE: EVERYTHING IS IRREVERSIBLE – A CONVERSATION WITH WES LEAVINS OF BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY
A couple of brief stumbles in the second stanza keep this album from perfection, but in truth, it’s a fantastic effort under a spotlight that some bands would happily recede from. If they are indeed constantly searching for more, as they explained in our recent feature with the band, this album is going to help them find it. Two thumbs up, and an intriguing glance at what might come next.
