BOB SUMNER
SOME PLACE TO REST EASY
NORTH COUNTRY COLLECTIVE/FLUFF & GRAVY
As an artist, there are two ways to go about tackling Americana music- you can play it straight, picking up the traditional elements (country, folk, other roots forms) and riding along with those, or trying to infuse them with something new, or combine these elements in a personal, individual way. White Rock BC artist Bob Sumner decidedly takes that other route, on his latest release Some Place To Rest Easy.
Sure, all the familiar, standard, if you will elements that comprise the Americana sound are present in Sumner’s music, yet it seems that Sumner doesn’t want to play it fully straight – not just country, or folk, or anything else that falls under Americana, but his own vision where particular musical elements fit in into his storytelling, the element that represents the tying element here.
And Sumner also has a good way with both words and music, making it all sound so familiar and so personal at the same time.
