SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BASTILLE – GOOSEBUMPS

Bastille

Bastille
Goosebumps
Republic Records/ Universal Music

Bastille continues to push the possibilities for electro-pop music on its surprise EP Goosebumps.

While the title track is a perfect single to entice listeners, “survivin’” is actually better in many ways. Maybe it’s the occasional saxophone accompaniment, or maybe it’s the lighthearted tempo that makes it stand out. One thing is for sure, it feels like the perfect anthem to finish off 2020.

At the totally opposite end of the musical spectrum is “WHAT YOU GONNA DO.” With a hard rock vibe, Bastille shows it isn’t afraid to show off its wide range of musical skills. Though it is reminiscent of “Pompeii,” the single that launched their career in 2013, however it is not as punchy. Where “Pompeii” was dominated by frontman Dan Smith’s brilliant vocals, “WHAT YOU GONNA DO” centers the loud guitar and drums, almost drowning out his vocals.

The 5-track EP rounds out with variations on “Goosebumps” and “survivin’” in the One Eyed Jack’s sessions. These tracks are smoother renditions hingeing on swooning melodies. “Goosebumps” with piano accompaniment is a beautiful rendition of the title track and a brilliant way to end this surprise EP.

Longtime fans of Bastille will love this rollercoaster of emotionally-driven electronic soundscapes.
