AVI C. ENGEL
FIVE FIGMENTS
INDEPENDENT

Toronto’s Avi C. Engel is surely one of the more productive singer-songwriters around at the moment, with a slew of releases available on their Bandcamp site, this 5-song thingy they called Five Figments being a second one this year. Realizing that their often very innovative approach might be a bit much even for devoted followers of their work, Engel smartly limits themselves to just five figments as the title says noting that ” 20 mins is long enough for a set at a punk show, so it’s long enough for an experimental EP listening party.”
And in essence, that is exactly what we get here, a set of instantly, partly composed, partly improvised set of pieces that, if not following song structures, unless they go into free space like “my parents met in a house of jungle fowl” or “box of old postcards.”
Yet, it is an engaging 20-min set, innovative and free-flowing, as is usually the case with Engel.
