SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS – BRILL BRUISERS

The New Pornographers
Brill Bruisers
Last Gang Entertainment
RATING_3.5_of_5.ai

The New Pornographers have a shot at winning the 2015 Polaris music prize. Their latest release Brill Bruisers is a catchy album; “a celebration album,” bubbling over but not over stimulating the senses with pretty melodies. It’s full of great tunes to crank to the highest volume on road trips, with tracks like “Wide Eyes;” “After years of planning and planning / It’s the monumental challenge of feeling / That you must fight before you start freewheeling.” This album is reminiscent of ‘90s music that we used to play air guitar and jump around to. Song after song provides a sweet, light, enjoyable listening experience. “Brill Bruisers,” “Champions of Red Wine,” “Backstairs” and “Dancehall Domine” are the strongest tunes. Unlike their other records where each singer seems to get three songs, Brill Bruisers gives the freedom for more elaboration and it pays off with the varied sounds each track has. This is the perfect time to check out this album.
