SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JAKE WINSTROM – RAZZMATAZZ!

Jake Winstrom

JAKE WINSTROM
RAZZMATAZZ!
INDEPENDENT

Power pop was never as big with music critics as some other genres or sub-genres, maybe because of that pop element within the term. Very often they labeled it as something that hasn’t changed that much since The Beatles came up with “Paperback Writer.”

Yet, so many bands and artists, from Badfinger and Big Star to those that came afterwards proved them wrong in so many ways and the subgenre is still around sounding both fresh and new as it did decades before.

Proving the point is New York’s Jake Winstrom and his third album RAZZMATAZZ! Winstrom obviously isn’t taking his songwriting lightly, as it shows that he is able to infuse his power pop base with elements often considered as parts of some other genres, and he does that seamlessly and with ease throughout the 10 well-thought out tracks here, without necessarily revealing where he got his inspiration from, something very few artists with that pop element tied to them can boast with these days.

by Ljubinko Zivkovic on April 24, 2026
