Step aside, Ferrari, Prada, and Barolo — Italy is starting to be known for something else — gothic rock! The Italian doom metal band MESSA is grabbing attention with their fourth monster album, The Spin, which was released on April 11th and is turning out to be a gothic metal fan favourite.

This audacious band is self-defined as scarlet doom metal rockers. But hold on, MESSA gets redefined as they use their creative juices with this LP to include a mix of jazz, blues, and Middle Eastern sounds you don’t often hear (if ever) from a metal band, let alone a doom metal band.

Vocals from lead singer Sara Bianchin will jump out and grab you as she comes blaring out of the gate with “Void Meridian.” This song includes some nice guitar riffs that couple with some quiet moments as it drifts off with the last note.

Next is “At Races,” with a quick tempo and a solemn split in the middle. The song mellows before you feel like flying at high speed down the road. “Fire On The Roof” has a cinematic vibe, like something you would hear in the background of a dramatic movie.

The other songs on the album have haunting vocals that include growling mixed in—yes, actual growling as if Freddy Krueger were in the room.

One thing is certain: you won’t hear the same thing played twice on this record, and it’s guaranteed not to be boring. The Spin could be the album that gets MESSA heard worldwide.
