Back in 2021, when Sara Bug came up with her self-titled album, as somebody who is working within a Nashville music scene, she didn’t bother to care much about what Nashville music norms and formulas she should apply, because she didn’t really apply any, or more precisely, she kind of used a pick ‘n’ choose process, taking only things she liked and fitted them into her music at free will.

In that respect, she applies the same process in part to some of the songs here, while with others, she uses some standard Nashville concepts, but then turns them on their head, whether it is the music or lyrics, as she adds a twist that supposedly shouldn’t be there.

Yet, it is there, and bug doesn’t care, and she shouldn’t as it not only works for here but for the listener too, making it sound so familiar and at the same time somewhat left-field, like on the lyrically tricky “No Man No Kids,” or her version of the soul standard “First Cut Is The Deepest,” and the clearest conclusion here is Bug swishes all the bugs. Again.
