SAM MOSS
SWIMMING
INDEPENDENT
With what you could call ‘standard’ singer/songwriters there is very little middle ground. They could either convey their music and lyrics to listeners or they can’t. It is often a minimalistic setting with not too many instruments involved in sparse arrangements and all your qualities (or failings) are widely exposed, of course, if those qualities are there in the first place.
Well, Sam Moss, on the evidence of his latest, simply-titled album Swimming, has got those qualities in spades. He can come up with melody and lyrics lines along with the best of them, without overburdening his arrangements, adding some interesting touches, like on “Moondreams” here just enough to make his music stand out. At the same time, Moss has a singing voice that has enough individuality to give his music that personal touch it needs to stand out.
Overall, Swimming is one of those singer/songwriter albums that fans of the genre will go for instantly.
