As we mentioned in our review of The Bird Call’s previous offering, Old Faithful, Sam Sodomsky, who operates under this moniker, is a man of solitude, somebody who wants to be calm, cool, and collected when he writes his music, something he shares with some other, often solitary artists like Will Oldham or Bill Callahan. He probably has a mobile phone (that just might be turned off), but he obviously sees social media as a distraction, as you shouldn’t bother looking for him there.
Yet that solitude seems to work so well for Sodomsky, as he continues to come up with some excellent combination of wistful lyrics and music on his new album, Melody Trail. And while the music itself might sound a bit more upbeat than previously, there is always a somewhat nostalgic, melancholic line running throughout, with Sodomsky’s intricate, humour-laced lyrics fully intact. The birds are calling us, again.
