It’s always quite comforting when you hear an indie band combine some fuzzy, lightly distorted guitars with gentle, subdued vocal harmonies, particularly if the songwriting is a good match for such a sound. That is exactly what we get to hear on words from a wishing well, the debut album by New York quartet shower curtain.

The band is led by Brazilian American artist Victoria Winter (vocals/guitar), alongside Ethan Williams (guitar/vocals), Sean Terrell (drums), and Cody Hudgins (bass).

At the same time as being comforting, the sound shower curtain creates has that precise balance between quiet and loud, and genre-wise, somewhere between slowcore and shoegaze, without any stark jumps between the two, as if they were created to be together.

The fact that the nine tracks here work just might lie in the fact that the band have the right songwriting touch and instrumental and vocal chops to make their music sound quite good.

It is a big step from their previous EP and singles, showing ample space for bigger things to come.
