Can modern be old? Sure, if you ask Long Island collective The New Students, who seem bound to try and reverse the process that is ongoing in Americana music.

Instead of taking old songs and music in general, they create modern-themed songs and set them in traditional musical forms, from folk and country to roots and bluegrass. Such a concept is all over the band’s latest offering Little Blue Dot, where through 12 songs they tackle such current themes as environmental crisis (“Greta’s Song”) or the refugee crisis (“The Refugee”).

It is a very tricky process, as you need to have extensive knowledge and understanding of those ‘old’ musical forms, and some better than good playing to pull such a concept through.

And the six-person strong collective, who has been around for over 15 years, shows that it certainly has both songwriting, playing, and vocal capabilities (their three-part vocal harmonies particularly shine) to pull such a concept through.
