TWINGLE – “LADY SUSAN”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Portland, Oregon based outlet, “Twingle”, the moniker of multi-instrumentalist and songstress, Anna Sabatino have released their debut single and video, “Lady Susan”. The track comes from their forthcoming album, Future CaviarΒ – releasing on vinyl, August 18th, 2024 via Little Cloud Records.
Raised in a one room cabin in the small town of Evergreen, Colorado Anna Sabatino, aka, Twingle, began writing songs at young age featuring guitar and banjo. Her roots are in oldtimey folk and bluegrass, but later went on to realms of Experimental/Psychedelic/French pop which all work to cultivate her sound and melodic patterns
“Lady Susan”, the first single taken off of Future Caviar, was inspired by Jane Austen’s first novel Lady Susan. The epistolary novella is about a femme fatale named Lady Susan, a newly widowed woman left with a significant financial burden from her late husband. She begins beguiling men in hopes of marrying herself and her 16 year old daughter Frederica to someone wealthy.
The line “It’s knowing what will give a woman an applause her daughter wouldn’t understand, she’ll find his way into his heart.” Depicts Lady Susan charming and manipulating men into falling under her spell.
Her daughter Frederica is the opposite. She’s kind, sensible and shy, making it difficult to come up against her mother for the affection of Reginald; the man she truly wishes to marry. In the end, Reginald starts to see Lady Susan’s true colors and Frederica makes her way into holding his attention.
The video for “Lady Susan”, was inspired by the films The Love Witch and Donkey Skin.
Songwriter Anna Sabatino (Aka Twingle), wanted the video to feel like it had been filmed in a Victorian Gothic era. At the beginning it was important to have the font be hand written in old English calligraphy to depict the letters written back and forth in Lady Susan. The calligraphy was done by Raqi Hurtado who Twingle found after searching for almost 6 months.
“We made their hands look ashy to allude to the imagery of a witch’s resurrection.”
The video portrays Lady Susan as a vain glamorous woman. Using different scenes in front of a mirror, mixing love potions, writing letters about her various conquests. At the end of the video Lady Susan closes the book, signaling the end of her games.
