SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE BIRD CALLS – OLD FAITHFUL

The Bird Calls

THE BIRD CALLS
OLD FAITHFUL
RUINATION RECORD CO.

Taking a similar route to the likes of Bill Callaghan and/or Will Oldham, often means that the artist in question is an individual that prefers solitude to create some delicate, well, individualistic music. Hence, very often, as is the case of Sam Sodomsky, who operates under the moniker of The Bird Calls, you just might not find many, social media connections, if any at all.

Can that help with coming up with some interesting music? In case of Sodomsky and his latest The Bird Calls album Old Faithful, it seems it definitely does, as the album is filled with Sodomsky’s intriguing lyrical ruminations coupled with sparse musical backing that stresses what the author wants to say.

“The words crashed through the window while I wrote this song
There’s still glass on the floor,
And I’m watching us undress in a memory that I made up
I let it play out until there’s no one in the house,”

sings Sodomsky on the title track, coming up with something quite worth listening to throughout the whole album.
