SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: ANASTASIA COOPE – DARNING WOMAN

Being labeled as a singer-songwriter and taking quite an experimental route with your music can be both a blessing and a curse for an artist. Doing that on your debut album, as Anastasia Coope does on Darning Woman doubles the risk. Yet, it seems Coope didn’t care much about the risks, possibly something to do with the fact that she is only 21 years of age. She comes up with a set of nine, surrealistic sketches, quite a few of them not even reaching two minutes, but they are sketches and full-fledged songs full of musical inventiveness and intriguing musical surprises, having more to do with modern psychedelia than your standard singer-songwriter fare.

Truly original in every sense, Coope uses her songwriting to create musical paintings mainly based on her acoustic guitar and multi-tracked vocal harmonies, that dazzle and surprise. While enjoying this album, it is quite interesting to see where she will go on from here next.
